I don't want to take away from the cookout thread, but most people know a flag flies in front of my house 365 days a year and I'm all about the patriotic things. So here's a bit of reading, I found a short version.
Memorial Day is an American (http://daytonasportbikes.com/united-states)holiday (http://daytonasportbikes.com/category/holidays) to honor the memory of American men and women who have died in service to their country during military duty. It is marked by visits to cemeteries and war memorials as well as outdoor events like picnics (http://daytonasportbikes.com/picnics), barbecues (http://daytonasportbikes.com/barbecue) and sporting events (http://daytonasportbikes.com/category/sports). Culturally, the three day Memorial Day weekend also begins the unofficial Summer (http://daytonasportbikes.com/summer) season.
Originally Memorial Day was a holiday to remember Union soldiers who died during the Civil War (http://daytonasportbikes.com/american-civil-war). It has since been expanded to include all American military deaths. It was promoted widely by General John A. Logan in the late 19th century (http://daytonasportbikes.com/19th-century). The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York and become a federal holiday in 1971 (http://daytonasportbikes.com/1971).
Now for a personal note.... my daughter has been playing taps at events marking 9/11, Memorial Day, and any other time she is called. At the Deltona High School Band banquet a couple weeks ago she received a certificate confirming her induction for her service into the National Bugler Hall of Fame.
When it comes to kids, I have the best two anywhere.
