OCALA — A 19-year-old Ocala motorcyclist was killed Wednesday afternooon when his 2008 blue Suzuki bike collided with a car on Northeast 25th Avenue.

Ocala police identified the motorcyclist as Geoffrey Griffin. The young man's stepfather, Ken Maddux, said Griffin worked part-time with his mother at Foundation Services in Ocala.

Alex Fort and Cassandra Cervantez, motorists who witnessed the crash, said the motorcyclist was driving fast north on the city roadway, weaving through traffic and “popping wheelies” shortly before the crash at Northeast 25th Avenue and Seventh Street.

They said the wreck occurred when a black Nissan Altima pulled out at the intersection. Police said the motorcycle slid 150 yards after impact.

Mary Croizier, 58, of Ocala, was driving the 2007 Nissan that collided with Griffin, according to Ocala police. She reportedly was not injured. Police were still investigating the crash and no charges had been filed.

Ocala Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Brian Stoothoff said the department received the call at 6:24 and was on scene at 6:27 p.m. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

Griffin had been wearing a helmet and motorcycle gear, which came off during the crash.

A review of online court records showed Griffin has had six speeding citations since 2006, including four for speeds 20-29 mph over the limit.

"We" look bad because a car pulled out in front of a bike?

Even if he was acting like a jackass, I'm pretty sure you're still not allowed to pull out in front of him ...

You reallllly don't know that, he may not have been doing something stupid at the time. He was doing "wheelies" prior to the accident, not at the time of impact. Maybe he popped the wheel up at a traffic light a few miles back? Who hasn't done that at some point?

oh and please for the love of all that is holy, someone say they've never "drove fast" on their bike like the article said.

Thats not fair, your bike doesn't have the ability to go fast ...

Not saying it absolves me or anyone but the fact he had six citations for speeding? Come on.

Just breaks my heart every time. Yeah, maybe he was a bit wild on the bike, and no he shouldn't of been riding like that through town, and yes, he probably contributed to the accident with his speed, but I just cant help but think that somewhere down inside, guys like this are diamonds in the rough, and when the right role model takes an interest in their lives, all that "stupid energy" gets brought into focus, and our community and country would hopefully be blessed with a fearless and totally committed warrior. It just burns inside me to try and get connected to these guys before they destroy themselves.

everybody knows it's the bike riders fault...motorcycle riders are a dangerous bunch... they don't conform with sociality's rules..the humans in cars are never at fault...wheelie,swerving,speeding OMG, see what happens when you scare the humans they kill you and walk away..oh well i guess thats just thinning the herd and raising insurance rates... sucks for family he left behind ,that now hate motorcycles.

Shame he wasn't as elite as some of us... He could of seen the car pulling in front of him, pulled out his M134a from his thunderwear holster, fired it up, cut the front end off the altima, and came to a safe stop :finger::finger::finger:

Chappy, very sad indeed but sometimes people learn the hard way and in this case the person paid the ulitimate price for it. Senseless but it happens everyday regardless of who as fault. :(

The only thing I could remotely understand is if you where referring to the fact that he had an ass load of tickets. Otherwise it's the same old thought process of those that live in glass houses. All of us have had the front wheel come up off the ground at some point, all of us have made some sort of move that afterwords we thought "hey maybe that wasn't smart" ...

so under that thinking if you jump off a bridge and then one of your friends does it it isn't bad because someone else did it. It's not just the tickets that were stupid doing wheelies on public streets is straight dumb. It just doesn't belong and this story is the proof.

This story has zero proof that wheelies caused this ... It is a stupid thing to do, but that is irrelevant to the story. People making it seem like that was the cause is what makes "us" look bad ...

I never said that it is a smart or good thing to do, What I'm saying is that your title is "This is why we look bad" yet there is nothing in here confirming it was his fault. The reason we look bad in this thread is because YOU tried to to read into a story more then is actually there.

Even if he wasn't speeding or doing wheelies at the time, the fact that the article goes into detail and says he was, as well as his ticket record, doesn't really make us look good. People are going to automatically assume the kid was doing something stupid, and it will only reinforce their perception of us as all riding fast and doing dangerous things.

But then, "Sportbike rider killed while obeying the speed limit" doesn't grab the readers as much, does it?

Bottom line is another squid just paid the ultimate price for his stupid actions. Yes we have all done a wheelie, and yes we have all broken the speed limit. If it had been any of us, the publics opinion would be the same. Another dumb crotch rocket rider got him self killed. Its a sad event for sure. Maybe he was speeding at the time and maybe he wasnt. It is tough for anyone, especially a none rider to judge how fast that bike is coming , if they even see it. Many mistakes were made, and the media sensationalized it. It makes all of us look bad.

press release from ocala pd website..
A traffic crash at the intersection of NE 7th St. and NE 25th Ave. on April 21, 2010 results in one fatality. On April 21, 2010 at approx. 6:18 PM Officers of the Ocala Police Department
responded to NE 7 Street and 25 Avenue in reference to a motorcycle and car
accident, with serious injuries. Just prior to this call our agency received
a report from a citizen that a similar motorcycle was driving recklessly
(excessive speed, wheelies, and weaving through lanes) north on SE 25 Avenue
from SE 17 Street. Upon arrival Officers found W/M Geoffery Griffin DOB
7/17/90 had been ejected from his 2008 Suzuki motorcycle and sustained serious
head injuries. From statement from eye witnesses Officers determined that
Griffin was driving in excess of 80 MPH, and had just done a wheelie (riding
on one tire) when Mary Croizier, 58 years of age, pulled out from a stop sign
at NE 7 Street. Griffin stuck the car, and died at the scene. The motorcycle
continued for two blocks. Accident Re-constructionists and Medical Examiner
Investigator responded. Griffin's license status was suspended and he had no
motorcycle endorsement. Case is on going and charges are pending.

Lt. Dan Wilson
Ocala Police Department.

Here is my two cents. We know the risk when we get on the bike- we do stupid things like wheelies and cagers do stupid things like switching lanes without looking. We are not bad people because we ride- that makes us people. We do what makes us happy and some take it farther than others. My front tire comes up on its own- is that still a wheelie? Im rambling- sorry been crying all week. My point is that EVERYONE no matter what they drive does stupid things on the road and sadly enough we are the majority that gets killed and talked about and the ppl in cars get away with murder- literally. I feel as if bikers are becoming the pit bulls of society, we get grouped together instead of looked at as individuals. For the people that walk away from murdering someone- I hope ur life is miserable and suffering in the worst possible facets- and for my biker buddies- I hope the idiots stay away from you and u truly understand the risks u are taking when u kick out of nuetral. I love you guys
