It says DAYTONA at the top of this page and you want me to support Deland ? Well, yes.
My daughter is in her sophomore year of the IB program @ Deland High School and is a member of the band. Until I got involved I had no idea of the budget issues that are facing these kids. When they do fund raisers it's really because they need the funds.
These kids work hard. They are back on campus 2 weeks before school starts at the end of summer break practicing marching drills outside all day. During the school year they work after school is out. They will be practicing for and performing at the Peach Bowl in Atlanta during the winter break. I'm not sure I'd want to give up that kind of time, but they do and we make sure they get there for it.
Below is the letter sent out by the students to help raise funds to support the program. I'm not asking for anything but awareness. But, if you do want to make a tax deductable contribution or be a corporate sponser and receive advertising for your business that would be very cool. Post, email, PM anything you'd like to know. Even if you just want to go to a concert that's cool too, and they're free.

The DeLand High School Marching Bulldogs are ready to embark on a new and exciting year of marching, concerts, competitions, and community service projects. DeLands Band and Guard, growing to over 160 students, have once again set high goals for this next year. We are headed to the Peach Bowl in Atlanta, Georgia on December 31, 2005.
Our Symphonic Band finished the year with straight Superior ratings (or 1s) at State competition which has not been accomplished in seven years. The Band members also received Superior marks at county competitions earlier in the year.
Many of the students are in some of the most challenging academic programs our school offers, such as the International Baccalaureate Diploma program and the Superintendents Diploma of Distinction. Band members are also active in Sports, service clubs such as Interact, National Honor Society, AFROTC, and BETA. In addition to their academic and band assignments, many of these students also are required to perform 150 hours of community service. The members of the DeLand Marching Bulldogs are some of the hardest working students in the school.
Support for our band comes solely from parents, student fundraisers, and donations. To better utilize the generous support we receive from our families, friends, and other supporters, we are asking that you become a Supporter of the DeLand High School Marching Bulldogs.
This year our budget to run the band program is $83,051.00. Another $61,132.00 has to be raised to get us to the Peach Bowl. Rather than ask our supporters to purchase candy, magazines, etc, from which the band only receives a portion of the funds, we are coming to you with this direct request. All donations will go directly to supporting the band. The student will receive 25% of all donations received from family and friends to help them offset the cost of band fees, instrument rental and of course, THE PEACH BOWL. All Donations are tax deductible.
In addition to our regular marching season, spring concert season, county and state competitions, and parades, we are also looking towards the future by establishing a uniform replacement fund for our ever growing band. Our other long term goal is to replace a portion of our aging instruments. We know these goals are lofty, but we feel confident that with the efforts of our students and parents, and the support of family, friends, and the DeLand community we will be able to represent our school and city with pride at the Peach Bowl and beyond.
