DAYTONA BEACH -- A motorcyclist was killed Monday night on Interstate 95 when he lost control and was thrown onto the highway, Florida Highway Patrol troopers said.

The unidentified motorcyclist crashed before 10 p.m. near the interchange of Interstate 4 and died at the scene, troopers said. The wreck closed the southbound lanes of I-95 for more than an hour. The interstate was closed in both directions for a time.

The man who died was traveling southbound with four or five other motorcyclists who all appeared to be in their 20s and were huddled on the shoulder of the highway after the wreck. They were driving sport bikes.

The fatal crash was the second in three days in Volusia County. Russell Scott Mills was killed on Blue Springs Avenue in Orange City about 11:30 p.m. Saturday. His convertible went off the road and hit a dirt mound, which sent it airborne, troopers said. The convertible flipped and hit a tree about 25 feet above the ground, then hit a utility pole, troopers said.

A Port Orange man who was killed after he lost control of his motorcycle on Interstate 95 was identified Tuesday by Florida Highway Patrol troopers.
Athanasios Kambourelis, 26, was riding his sport bike east on Interstate 4 when he drove too fast onto the southbound ramp of I-95 and lost control about 9:45 p.m. Monday, FHP spokeswoman Trooper Kim Miller said.

Kambourelis was ejected from the motorcycle into the center lane, Miller said. His motorcycle slid across all three lanes of the highway into the emergency lane, she said.

Eduardo Hernandes, 55, of Miami, who was driving a tractor-trailer south on I-95, tried to avoid Kambourelis. However, Kambourelis was struck by the semi and dragged almost 200 feet, Miller said. Kambourelis was pronounced dead at the scene. He was wearing a helmet.

Hernandes was wearing a seat belt and was not injured, Miller said.

Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, Miller said.

Hey guys...sorry it's been a while since I've been in here.

This was Thano...I'm sure some of you knew him...He rode an '04 red/silver Aprilia Mille R.

He had many friends and was loved by all who knew him. He was one of my best friends so this was a tough loss for me personally. We are planning to do some sort of gathering for him if anyone here is interested I will post the details once we get something put together.
