DAYTONA BEACH -- A motorcyclist was killed Monday night on Interstate 95 when he lost control and was thrown onto the highway, Florida Highway Patrol troopers said.
The unidentified motorcyclist crashed before 10 p.m. near the interchange of Interstate 4 and died at the scene, troopers said. The wreck closed the southbound lanes of I-95 for more than an hour. The interstate was closed in both directions for a time.
The man who died was traveling southbound with four or five other motorcyclists who all appeared to be in their 20s and were huddled on the shoulder of the highway after the wreck. They were driving sport bikes.
The fatal crash was the second in three days in Volusia County. Russell Scott Mills was killed on Blue Springs Avenue in Orange City about 11:30 p.m. Saturday. His convertible went off the road and hit a dirt mound, which sent it airborne, troopers said. The convertible flipped and hit a tree about 25 feet above the ground, then hit a utility pole, troopers said.
