1 Eric Bostrom Kawasaki Kawasaki ZXR750 1:26.132
2 Nicky Hayden American Honda Honda RC51 1:26.619
3 Doug Chandler HMC Ducati Ducati 996R 1:27.508
4 Aaron Yates Yoshimura Suzuki Suzuki GSXR-750 1:27.509
5 Jamie Hacking Yoshimura Suzuki Suzuki GSXR-750 1:27.525
6 Anthony Gobert Yamaha Motor Corp Yamaha R7 1:27.703
7 Mat Mladin Yoshimura Suzuki Suzuki GSXR-750 1:27.716
8 Miguel Duhamel American Honda Honda RC51 1:28.006
9 Kurtis Roberts American Honda Honda RC51 1:28.176
10 Pascal Picotte Austin/Bleu Bayou Ducati Ducati 996R 1:28.921
Eric Bostrom is honing in on the AMA lap record of 1:25.507, set by Anthony Gobert in 1999. With lap times in the first session closing in on a half-second of lap record time, will the mark be broken when the soft tires come out for this afternoon's qualifying session?
Tomorrow, the AMA Superbike boys will not ride their AMA machines at all, putting a sense of urgency into today's sessions held in clear weather.
Laguna has the reputation as a "rider's track", one that responds to aggressive riding tactics. Guys who go well here? Gobert, the Bostroms, Nori Haga ... all guys not afraid to get the rear a little loose.
Doug Chandler was third in the session after testing well here last spring.
